MBSJ tightens spending controls to prioritise public value

SHAH ALAM, May 1 — The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) is strengthening its financial discipline by implementing expenditure control measures to ensure all public funds are spent transparently, efficiently and prudently.

Subang Jaya Mayor Datuk Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim said the move is crucial in facing global economic uncertainties while ensuring every expenditure delivers optimal impact to the public.

“Among the measures to be emphasised are controls on official overseas visits, programmes and official events, asset and utility management, procurement, as well as operating and development expenditure.

“In addition, savings will involve controlling travel and managing meetings, and implementing spending based on the ‘value for money’ principle,” he said during MBSJ's monthly meeting recently.

He added that prioritising disciplined financial management is essential to ensure public funds are used optimally and deliver the best value to the community.

“In the current challenging economic climate, every expenditure must be carefully planned so that its benefits are truly felt by the people.

“As such, MBSJ will continue to emphasise financial governance that is rooted in integrity, efficiency, and the ‘value for money’ principle."

Amirul said the implementation of these measures is guided by directives issued by the Selangor State Treasury through the State Public Expenditure Control Directive dated April 9.

“Accordingly, MBSJ presented the implementation of this directive at the Finance Committee meeting on April 21 and agreed to fully adopt the outlined cost-saving measures with immediate effect,” he said.

Previously, state executive councillor for local government Dato' Ng Suee Lim said local authorities in the state are facing operational cost increases of up to 20 per cent due to rising energy and fuel prices.

He noted that the cost pressures have directly affected the financial position of local authorities, which have had to readjust spending after annual budgets were finalised earlier.

He added that the 15 to 20 per cent increase involves key components such as solid waste management, infrastructure maintenance, landscaping works, and daily logistics operations.
