AMPANG JAYA, Apr 27 — The appointment of former High Court judge Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, effective May 13, is expected to strengthen anti-corruption efforts in the country.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the appointment is also hoped to fulfil and continue the aspirations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the MADANI government to eradicate corruption.

“Congratulations to the new MACC chief commissioner. It is hoped he will fulfil and continue the aspirations of the prime minister and the MADANI government in combating corruption.

“I believe the majority of the people in our country want a clean-up, and for such practices to be ended for the well-being and prosperity of the nation,” he said.

He was speaking after officiating the presentation ceremony of the 2026 Muassasah Haj Incentive contributions to 236 prospective pilgrims from the Sungai Tua, Gombak Setia and Hulu Kelang state constituencies at Masjid Al-Hidayah Taman Melawati here yesterday.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced yesterday that Abdul Halim has been appointed as the new MACC chief commissioner, effective May 13.

The appointment received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, and was made in accordance with Subsection 5(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694).

Abdul Halim replaces Tan Sri Azam Baki, whose tenure is scheduled to end on May 12.

Azam was reappointed three times to the post, each for a one-year term, from May 12, 2023 to May 11, 2024; May 12, 2024 to May 12, 2025; and May 13, 2025 to May 12 this year.

He first assumed the role of MACC chief commissioner on March 9, 2020, replacing Latheefa Beebi Koya, who shortened her service contract in accordance with Subsection 5(3) of the MACC Act 2009.
