SHAH ALAM, April 22 — The Selangor Disabled Youth Council has expressed hope that more premises and infrastructure in the state are accessible to people with disabilities (OKU).
Its president Muhammad Ghazali Othman said there is room for improvement, especially with public facilities.
“Even though awareness of OKU (needs) is high in Selangor, there are areas where we see the need for improvement.
“Cooperation between relevant agencies must be strengthened to facilitate improvements. We hope Selangor can be an example for other states in terms of the more systematic availability of (OKU-friendly) infrastructure,” he told Media Selangor during a visit to the Selangor State Legislative Assembly with 11 representatives from the council.
Ghazali said the visit afforded the council leadership valuable experience and exposure.
Meanwhile, state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said the visit provided space for the OKU group to appreciate assembly sittings as the highest institution of state legislation, as well as to share their views on existing facilities.
“Through this visit, we received input on how premises or buildings, from an infrastructure standpoint, could be friendly to OKU, and what improvements can be made,” she added.
Anfaal also said the council delegation’s visit was an honour for the state government, as their presence was to facilitate continued improvement through the OKU Action Council.
