SHAH ALAM, April 22 — Over eight million trees of various species have been successfully planted across Selangor since 2021, approaching the target set under the Selangor State 11 Million Tree Planting Programme.
State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the Selangor Forestry Department (JPNS) recorded the planting of approximately 2,502,911 trees, while the local authorities and the District and Land Offices recorded 5,547,100 trees.
“The tree planting programme is still ongoing at all levels, and JPNS will coordinate data on plantings carried out by higher education institutions, schools, the local authorities, and the District and Land Offices, together with the Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre,” she said.
Jamaliah was responding to Batu Tiga state assemblyman Danial Al Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid's oral question on the strategy and status of the 11 million tree-planting target during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
Meanwhile, the state government has set a new target of planting 100,000 trees this year, to be implemented by all local authorities, District and Land Offices, and government agencies.
She added that JPNS is also taking monitoring and maintenance measures for trees that pose risks or are hazardous, especially in permanent forest reserve areas.
“Local authorities, meanwhile, use the National Landscape Guidelines Edition 2.0 developed by the National Landscape Department as a reference in determining tree species, landscape planting, and maintenance methods,” Jamaliah said.
On Monday (April 20), the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj said the state government is on the right track to ensure environmental sustainability through various initiatives, including the target of planting 11 million trees.
The programme, launched in 2021, aims to conserve the environment through collaboration among various agencies, while also increasing green areas and addressing climate change issues.
