SHAH ALAM, April 20 — The Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 should be postponed until the crisis in West Asia is resolved and works on the Shah Alam Stadium are complete, said Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
“In the current economic situation, I think it is fair for (SUKMA) to be postponed until the (West Asia) crisis is resolved and Shah Alam Stadium is completed,” His Royal Highness said in an opening address of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
The West Asia conflict came to a head on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Tehran responded by targeting US assets in Gulf nations and blocking the Strait of Hormuz through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply transits.

Meanwhile, the Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA) is expected to be completed by 2030, with the new structure to be finished by 2029.
On April 9, the SUKMA Supreme Committee, chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari, said the biennial sporting event would go on as planned from August 15 to 24, and Para SUKMA from September 5 to 14.
This decision was made after a meeting also attended by state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi, during which participants considered all aspects including athlete readiness and preparations already done for the event.

Selangor kicked off preparations for SUKMA 2026 last year with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari having launched the logo and mascots on August 15, 2025, as well as the theme “Our Rhythm, Our Moves”.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 will feature 474 events in 37 sports across 53 venues in Selangor’s nine districts, except for track cycling, which will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
This is the second-to-last SUKMA before the Youth and Sports Ministry reviews the event’s structure.
On August 7, 2025, then youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said Kelantan could be the final state to host a SUKMA (in 2028) before the government introduces a new model for the sporting event.
