SHAH ALAM, April 17 — The agriculture sector continues to be one of the main contributors to Selangor’s economy, recording a total income value of RM8.68 billion.
The performance is encouraging in terms of income, employment, and activity structure, further strengthening the sector’s role in the state’s economic development.
According to the Malaysian Statistics Department (DOSM), the crops subsector emerged as the largest contributor, with a value of RM4.30 billion or 49.6 per cent of the total agricultural sector income.
This was followed by the livestock subsector at RM2.63 billion (30.3 per cent) and capture fisheries at RM1.47 billion (16.9 per cent).
“Three key districts: Kuala Selangor (RM1.84 billion), Sabak Bernam (RM1.82 billion), and Kuala Langat (RM1.47 billion), have been identified as the highest contributors to agricultural sector income.
“In terms of expenditure, Kuala Selangor recorded RM974.24 million, followed by Sabak Bernam (RM816.03 million), and Hulu Selangor (RM544.48 million),” it said in the 'Agricultural Census Report 2024: Selangor' released yesterday.
DOSM added that agricultural holdings operated by organisations dominated the sector, contributing RM5.27 billion or 60 per cent of total income, compared to individual holdings, which recorded RM3.41 billion (39.3 per cent).
In terms of employment, Selangor’s agriculture sector recorded 70,058 workers in 2023, with the crops subsector as the main contributor, involving 49,168 workers. Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, and Kuala Langat continued to dominate the sector’s workforce.
Meanwhile, the average annual salaries and wages in Selangor’s agriculture sector were recorded at RM21,534, with organisational holdings at RM21,191 and individual holdings at RM21,925, reflecting the sector’s role in generating income for the people.
It noted that the findings show that the agriculture sector is not only vital to the state economy but also a key provider of employment opportunities for communities in Selangor.
