SHAH ALAM, April 12 — Selangor is developing a Silver Economy framework to expand senior citizens’ opportunities to generate income, said state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.
She added that the approach would recognise elderly folk not as mere aid recipients, but as contributors to the economy and community.
“Selangor is making meticulous preparations to face an ageing community not only from a welfare aspect, but through long-term economic and social development approaches.
“Selangor is working to develop a ‘Silver Economy’ so senior citizens may generate income and share skills according to their capabilities, and help them contribute to the state’s economy,” she told Media Selangor.
Anfaal added that the state government will ramp up programmes under the care economy agenda, including by bringing the MamaKerja initiative back.
She said the initiative would support working mothers, especially those in the “sandwich generation” who are responsible for raising their children while caring for their ageing parents.
“This is why the state is supporting (sandwich-generation mothers) with initiatives for women to return to work, more flexible work arrangements, and expanding access to quality, affordable care services,” she explained.
She said the Selangor government is also working to introduce initiatives like the Respite Care Wellness Hub.
“This provides caregivers with not only temporary rest areas, but also access to health screening, early intervention, and psychospiritual support for senior citizens and their families,” Anfaal added.
