SHAH ALAM, April 11 — Selangor continues to strengthen its support system for disabled persons by placing emphasis on early training among families and communities.

State executive council for women's empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari said the move aims to ensure that caregivers are better prepared to face caregiving challenges.

The effort is implemented by empowering caregivers with knowledge and skills, including the development of more effective coping mechanisms to manage the needs of disabled individuals.

“Among the key initiatives are the implementation of the Selangor Special Needs Children Parents Module as well as Akademi YANIS, which aim to enhance the capacity of families in understanding and addressing disability-related issues comprehensively.

“Through these programmes, we not only provide early exposure to families but also help them build confidence and practical skills to manage daily challenges more effectively,” she said during an interview at her office in the State Secretariat Building recently.

Anfaal added that every policy developed by the state government takes into account the priorities of target groups in an inclusive manner, including the Selangor Women Policy and Action Plan 2024-2026 and the Selangor Care Economy Policy 2026-2030.

The Selangor State Disabled Persons Policy is currently in its final stage and is expected to be launched at the upcoming State Legislative Assembly sitting as a further step to strengthen the welfare agenda and social inclusivity in Selangor.

In addition, the implementation of the Disability Equality Training programme, a collaboration between the Selangor Economic Action Council and the Social Welfare Department (JKM), will also enhance employers’ understanding of workplace fairness and equality for disabled persons.

“This training is important to ensure that companies, government-linked companies, as well as the local authorities, truly understand the needs of disabled persons and subsequently integrate elements of social inclusivity into their policies and practices,” she said.

Anfaal also emphasised the importance of capacity building among policymakers through a gender mainstreaming approach to ensure that every policy is formulated to fairly and equitably take into account the needs of various segments of society.

This comprehensive approach is expected to create a stronger support ecosystem for disabled persons, while improving their quality of life and that of their families.
