SHAH ALAM, April 6 — The state government intends to expand collaboration with agencies and private companies to strengthen recycling activities as a cost-saving measure.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim said the focus is on manufacturing industry players, as they possess recycling expertise.
“This effort is being carried out so that the volume of waste generated can be reduced, thereby lowering collection operation costs. We have already established cooperation with several companies, including Nestlé.
“We want more industry players to be involved because our goal has always been to reduce waste, not to see it increase every year,” he told Media Selangor.
Ng added that since last year, his office, together with the state environmental committee, has been driving environmental awareness campaigns among stakeholders and the local authorities.

“We want to carry out as many recycling activities as possible to save costs in terms of waste management, as this can also generate additional revenue. Instead of continuously disposing of waste, it is better to recycle it.
"Alongside outreach, we will also hold workshops to help the public gain exposure. We will also organise suitable courses on the importance of recycling,” he said.
In April last year, the state government, through KDEB Waste Management, formalised a collaboration with Nestlé Malaysia to strengthen recycling through door-to-door collection.
The SELKitar programme is a new phase of the Door-to-Door Collection and Recycling Project, introduced by Nestlé in 2020 across several states.
This programme is the largest voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility initiative in Malaysia and is currently being implemented, involving 200,000 households in six major cities.
