SHAH ALAM, April 5 — The Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 must go on as a postponement could increase spending, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.
He said decisions on SUKMA must be made after comprehensive study, including on financial implications and preparations already made.
“Among discussion items were cost assessments and the suggestion for postponement as previously raised.
“Most likely, if postponed, the cost to organise the event again would be higher, especially as (some) preparations are done and it is only three months till the event,” he said when met at an Aidilfitri event at Dewan Raja Muda Musa here yesterday.

Najwan added that SUKMA was discussed during a Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting chaired by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari yesterday to assess the level of preparations done, including from the aspects of costs, logistics, and the need for improvements ahead of the event.
He said the state cannot make unilateral decisions on SUKMA, but must obtain approval from the federal government.
“If a delay causes increased costs, then it’s better for (the event) to go on as planned.
“This matter will be brought to the SUKMA supreme committee meeting to be chaired by the youth and sports minister on April 11 for further discussion,” Najwan explained.
The 22nd SUKMA will be held from August 15 to 24, while Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to 14.
