SHAH ALAM, March 31 — The Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) continues to boost results, as the state’s average grade improved to 4.52 in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the improvement shows how effective the free classes for Form Five students over the past few years have been.
“This proves that the PTRS helps candidates achieve excellent results, including by increasing the number of students eligible to receive certificates,” he told Media Selangor.
According to him, 92.15 per cent of SPM 2025 candidates are eligible to receive their certificates, compared with 91.53 per cent for SPM 2024.
“This achievement is praiseworthy as the state government has helped students achieve excellent results,” he said.
Earlier, Azri attended a ceremony where Selangor State Education Department director Wan Nor Ashikin Abd Kassim announced the state’s SPM 2025 results, at SMK Putra Perdana in Puchong.
In her speech, Wan Nor Ashikin credited Yayasan MBI for implementing the PTRS and helping students prepare for SPM.
Throughout last year, over 160,000 Form Four and Form Five students attended free tuition classes under the PTRS, which received an allocation of RM10 million. The classes were offered for the Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics subjects.
PTRS targets students from lower-income families with moderate or poor academic performance.
The primary school-level PTRS meanwhile focuses on students in remedial classes so they may master the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic.
When the SPM 2024 results were announced, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said PTRS was a main contributor to the increasing number of students in Selangor who earned straight As.
