SHAH ALAM, March 30 — Industrial and commercial activities have been identified as among the main sources of pollution threatening water quality, according to the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS).

The agency stressed that the discharge of untreated effluent into public drainage systems can trigger serious pollution, potentially affecting the supply of raw water to consumers.

To mitigate these risks, LUAS has tightened controls and enforcement under the Water Discharge Licensing Regulations, Entry or Release of Waste and Pollutants (State of Selangor) 2024.

Regular sampling is also carried out to ensure all premises comply with stipulated standards, while enabling early detection of violations before they escalate into major incidents.

“Strict action will be taken, including violation charges, licence revocation, compounds and prosecution against non-compliant premises,” LUAS said.

According to the agency, these measures are in line with the implementation of Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) to ensure the state’s water resources remain clean, safe and sustainable.
