Sepang records sharp drop in surplus food from Ramadan bazaars

SHAH ALAM, Mar 19 — The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) recorded a significant decline in surplus food recovered from three Ramadan bazaars this year under the MySaveFood @ Bazar Ramadan programme.

MPSepang president Ani Ahmad said a total of 588.39kg of surplus food, including beverages, was collected between February 19 and March 11 from bazaars at Kosmopleks Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Cyberjaya and Kota Warisan, The Star reported.

The figure marked a sharp drop compared to 2,301.34kg recorded throughout Ramadan last year.

“The programme aims to reduce food wastage at Ramadan bazaars,” she said during the council’s full board meeting, as quoted by the English daily.

Ani said surplus items that are fit for consumption will be distributed to those in need.

She added that the initiative, now in its third year, is implemented in collaboration with the Malaysia Gema Youth Association (Gema) as part of a broader nationwide effort.

She said that the programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which emphasises responsible consumption and production.

Meanwhile, MySaveFood programme director Ainul A’syara Kamal said a total of 9,987.6kg of surplus food was collected from 25 Ramadan bazaars across Selangor this year, an increase from 16 locations in 2025.

“Until March 12, the last day of the programme in the state, the estimated value of the total surpluses collected stood at RM127,366.93, which translates to a reduction of 18,858.2kg in carbon dioxide emissions.

“Total collection for last year was 8,809.8kg, with an estimated value of RM118,049.18 and a reduction of 16,895.5kg in carbon dioxide emissions,” she said.

At the national level, Ainul said 70,753.52kg of surplus food worth RM889,913.30 had been collected as of March 16, resulting in an estimated reduction of 134,950.16kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

She added that 2,853 volunteers were involved in the programme this year.
