KUALA LANGAT, March 18 — The use of artificial intelligence (AI) requires control and monitoring mechanisms to prevent misuse of the technology.
State executive councillor for housing and culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said such measures are important to ensure AI is used responsibly.
"There should be a government body that monitors AI to ensure the technology is not used arbitrarily based on individual ideologies," he said when met at the Bingkisan Hari Raya 2026 programme for the Tanjong Sepat state constituency here yesterday.
He said the issue could be likened to the use of drones, which were previously unregulated and later only allowed to be operated in restricted areas.
"Previously, the public could use drones as they wish in restricted areas. Now, there is control and licence requirement."
Borhan said a similar approach should be applied for AI technology to ensure it does compromise facts or the interests of the society.
On March 10, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that AI should be viewed as a tool to enhance creative processes in the arts industry, particularly in music and film, rather than replace creators.
He added that further discussions should be intensified with relevant bodies such as the Music Authors’ Copyright Protection Bhd (MACP), Recording Performers Malaysia Bhd (RPM) and Public Performance Malaysia Bhd (PPM) to ensure AI use does not undermine the rights and interests of creators.
