SHAH ALAM, March 15 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has stressed that the development of the Sultan Idris Shah (SIS) Green Energy Plant in Rawang will only proceed after fully complying with all environmental regulatory requirements and receiving final approval from the Malaysian Environment Department (DOE).

Its managing director Dato' Ramli Mohd Tahir said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) application for the proposed project is currently undergoing the standard review process by the DOE.

Preliminary feedback from the DOE and the Environmental Impact Assessment Technical Review Committee (EIATRC) has not yet indicated any fundamental concerns regarding the proposed project design or the suitability of the development site.

“Contrary to the circulating speculation, the EIA application for the project has not been rejected and is still undergoing the standard review process by the Environment Department.

“Official feedback from the DOE and EIATRC so far has also not indicated any fundamental concerns regarding the project design or the suitability of the development site,” he said in a statement.

Ramli added that the administrative review currently being conducted is part of the normal regulatory process for large-scale infrastructure projects.

The process also involves improving documentation and compiling feedback from public engagement sessions conducted over the past two years, with more than 12,000 responses received from various stakeholders.

“The DOE has also requested that the documentation of public feedback be refined to ensure that every view is comprehensively recorded and carefully assessed during the project evaluation process,” he said.

The proposed development of the SIS Green Energy Plant forms part of Selangor’s long-term strategy to modernise its solid waste management system and reduce reliance on increasingly constrained landfill capacity.

The facility will utilise waste-to-energy (WTE) technology, which is widely used globally as a safe and sustainable method for managing solid waste.

“This technology has the potential to generate renewable energy while managing domestic waste more efficiently,” Ramli said.

He noted that once operational, the plant will be equipped with strict emission-control systems and continuous environmental monitoring to protect public health and sustain the ecosystem.

“KDEBWM remains committed to working closely with regulatory authorities, technical experts, and the community to ensure the development of sustainable and resilient waste management solutions for Selangor in the long term,” Ramli said.
