SHAH ALAM, March 12 — A total of 11 flood mitigation projects and two studies have been planned across major river basins in Selangor, including the Sungai Klang, Sungai Langat and Sungai Damansara, to address recurring floods in the state.

Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said eight of the projects are currently underway, while five others are at the pre-implementation stage.

“The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), through the Irrigation and Drainage Department, has continuously taken proactive and integrated steps to reduce flood risks in Selangor, including the state capital Shah Alam and surrounding areas,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.

He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Prof Mohammad Redzuan Othman on the efforts taken by the federal government to address frequent flooding in Selangor, especially in Shah Alam and surrounding areas.

Fadillah, who is also deputy prime minister, said the projects cover several main river basins and include the construction of dual-function retention ponds to improve water flow control.

He added that the implementation of the projects is based on priority and local flood risk levels.

“Completion is targeted in stages, subject to funding approval and implementation readiness.”

Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, seen here in Parliament on February 4, 2026, says that flood mitigation projects in Selangor are prioritised according to the urgency involved.

In Shah Alam, Fadillah said three flood mitigation projects are currently being implemented, including the Sungai Damansara flood mitigation plan (RTB) within the Sungai Klang basin, which began in October 2024 and is expected to be completed in July 2029.

As of February 9, 2026, the project had achieved 5.66 per cent physical progress.

The second project is the Sungai Klang RTB in Section 25, Shah Alam, which started in February 2024 and is scheduled for completion in January 2029. The project had reached 37.92 per cent physical progress as of the same date.

The third involves a dual-function retention pond project for flood mitigation and raw water supply from Sungai Klang to Sungai Rasau in the Petaling district. The project began on July 22, 2024, and is expected to be completed in 2031.

“The scope of work involves design, upgrading flood retention ponds, construction of floodwalls, water control gates, flow diversion and pump stations,” he said, adding that the project recorded 2.31 per cent physical progress as of February 9, 2026.

Apart from large-scale projects, he said short-term mitigation measures are also being carried out through river conservation projects, involving dredging, bank stabilisation and upgrading of drainage channels and structures to reduce localised flood risks.

For 2026, he said RM18 million has been approved for Selangor to carry out these smaller-scale works.
