SHAH ALAM, July 23 — The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) and the Selangor government have allocated RM400 million to RM500 million to upgrade bunds statewide to mitigate floods, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He said PETRA has completed and handed over five bund upgrade projects to the state government in Morib, Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.
Izham said the funds were a one-off contribution from PETRA to supplement the state government’s annual budget under the Caruman Parit allocation to strengthen Selangor’s flood mitigation infrastructure.
“In addition, upgrading works on the embankment in Kelanang, Banting are being carried out using new stone fibre machine technology from (South) Korea, which has proven to be more effective and cost-efficient.
“We are also using the Schematic Prefabricated System technology for the bund upgrade project at Sungai Bukit Changgang. It was previously used in Tanjung Karang and has proven its effectiveness, as the bund structure remained intact despite being hit several times in overtopping incidents (waves above the bund level),” he told a press conference after the Selangor Integrated Coastal Management Plan Review Workshop at De Palma Hotel here today.
Izham also said Selangor has an extensive bund network of about 750km along rivers and another 200km along its coast, adding that the network requires consistent maintenance and upgrades to ensure its effectiveness.
Previously, PETRA announced that the federal government had approved 25 projects under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), involving an allocation of RM3.63 billion, for 16 ongoing projects and nine new initiatives for flood mitigation, drainage upgrades, river corridor rehabilitation, coastal erosion control, and the construction of mechanical infrastructure in Selangor.
