SHAH ALAM, July 21 — Seven development projects under the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), worth a total of RM83 million, have been completed to reduce the risk of flooding and coastal erosion in several areas of Selangor.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the projects, implemented by the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department, included river upgrading works and the strengthening of embankments at various locations.
"Seven projects launched between 2023 and 2024 have been completed, with some finished ahead of schedule to mitigate flooding in several localities, including the coastal areas of Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, and Morib.
"The projects in Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam have produced positive results. For example, Kuala Selangor recorded seven flood incidents before the project was completed, but only one incident afterwards.
"We have seen improved water flow management that has helped reduce flood risks, particularly during periods of exceptionally high tides. This also includes the two projects at Sungai Penchala and Sungai Kemensah, which have enhanced the surrounding environment while improving drainage," he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the media after the presentation ceremony for development projects under PETRA at the State Secretariat Building today.
He added that several additional projects are currently under consideration, including the second phase of the Sungai Langat project, to further reduce the risk of river overflow in affected areas.
"Several other projects are being reviewed, including Sungai Langat Phase 2, valued at RM1 billion, which we will require a longer implementation period for.
"The package at Sungai Buloh is awaiting completion, and it will help reduce river overflows affecting major waterways and nearby localities such as Ijok, Bukit Hijau, and Bukit Kuching," Amirudin said.
Among the completed projects are the RM4.29 million strengthening of the Sungai Penchala riverbank, the RM9.4 million upgrading of Sungai Kemensah, the RM2.62 million coastal protection and embankment strengthening project at Pantai Sungai Haji Dorani, and the RM1.79 million coastal protection and embankment strengthening project at Pantai Batu 23.
Also completed are the RM4.83 million coastal erosion control project in Kuala Selangor and the RM60.5 million coastal rehabilitation project at Morib.
