SHAH ALAM, March 8 — The Dataran Selangor flagpole at Shah Alam Club was the brainchild of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, with the idea firs mooted on December 1, 2023.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said His Royal Highness expressed his wish for the flagpole to become one of Selangor’s proud monuments.
"The construction of the Dataran Selangor flagpole originated from the vision and decree of the Sultan himself.
“He expressed his desire for a tall, iconic, and dignified flagpole to be built as a symbol of pride for Selangor in Shah Alam.
“The state government has undertaken this responsibility with full commitment and loyalty, providing the necessary allocation to realise this noble aspiration,” he said during the Selangor state flag-hoisting ceremony at Dataran Selangor (Selangor Square) here.
The event was officiated by Sultan Sharafuddin.
Amirudin said the RM8.5 million project funded by the state government began on September 10, 2024 and was completed yesterday, six days ahead of schedule.
The Menteri Besar also noted that the 120-metre-tall structure has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as Southeast Asia's tallest flagpole.
"This recognition is a symbol of pride for the people of Selangor and proves the capability of local experts in producing large scale structures that meet international quality and safety standards.
“The design of Dataran Selangor not only showcases physical grandeur but also reflects the spirit and identity of the people of Selangor,” he said.
The nine-petaled Tanjung flower motif adorning the square symbolises Selangor’s nine districts united under a single banner.
Meanwhile, the combination of floral and Islamic geometric elements in the contemporary architectural approach reflects the Malay-Islamic heritage, preserved alongside the state’s progress.
