SHAH ALAM, March 8 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj today officiated the Selangor state flag-hoisting ceremony at the new 120-metre-tall flagpole at Dataran Selangor here.
His Royal Highness also witnessed the presentation of the Malaysia Book of Records certificate to State Secretary Dato’ Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin, recognising the flagpole as the tallest in Southeast Asia.
He said the flagpole is another symbol of pride for the state and a new landmark for Shah Alam.
“I am grateful to Allah for His blessings, allowing another history to be created in Selangor today. When envisioning its construction, it was my sincere hope that this flagpole would become a symbol of unity for the people of Selangor, while fostering respect for the flag and love for the state.
“I chose March 8, 2026, as the official inauguration date of this flagpole to coincide with the birthday of my late father, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj.
"He was the key figure in developing Shah Alam and declaring it the state capital of Selangor in 1978,” His Royal Highness said.
The Sultan also decreed that the Malaysian flag would be raised at the top of the flagpole for 10 days during the annual National Day celebration on August 31, as a symbol of patriotism and national unity between Selangor and other states in Malaysia.
Also present at the ceremony were Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
The flag-raising ceremony began with a bugle call and a poetry recital.
The flagpole project at the Shah Alam Selangor Club is a historic initiative inspired by the Sultan’s vision and decree.
On January 6, 2026, Sultan Sharafuddin officially named the project “Dataran Selangor” or “The Selangor Square”, a name reflecting the grandeur and identity of the state of Selangor Darul Ehsan.
