SHAH ALAM, Feb 19 — High-risk groups such as smokers, diabetics, and patients with chronic kidney disease must be extra vigilant against tuberculosis (TB), said Selangor State Health director Dr Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin.

She advised these groups to take preventive measures following 503 new TB cases reported nationwide in the fifth Epidemiological Week, bringing the cumulative total this year to 2,571.

“If cough persists, seek treatment immediately at the nearest health facility. Don’t ignore it.

“At the same time, during this Ramadan season, wear a face mask in crowded areas, especially at Ramadan bazaars or shopping malls,” she told Media Selangor.

On February 15, the Health Ministry (MOH) reported that Selangor is the state with the second highest number of TB cases this year, with 476 out of the total 2,571 cases nationwide.

Ummi Kalthom also called on the public to follow proper coughing and sneezing etiquette in public, to help curb the spread of TB.

“This measure is not only based on the principle of self-risk assessment, but is also an important social responsibility to protect yourself, your family and the community from infectious diseases,” she said.

Previously, the Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said 85 per cent of reported TB cases involved locals, highlighting that the risk of community transmission is real and should not be taken lightly.
