Selangor Health Dept advises postponing open house visits for those with infectious disease symptoms

SHAH ALAM, March 20 — Individuals showing symptoms of infectious diseases are advised to postpone attending social gatherings or open house events to prevent the spread of illness during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

The Selangor Health Department said the risk of infection increases during festive periods due to close contact among family members and more frequent visiting activities.

“They are also advised to seek medical examination at a health clinic promptly. Practising covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, as well as avoiding prolonged stays in crowded and enclosed spaces, can also help reduce the risk of disease transmission,” it told Media Selangor.

The department added that among the illnesses that often rise during festive seasons and school holidays are hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in children as well as respiratory infections such as influenza.

In addition, other infectious diseases, including chickenpox, can spread easily through close interaction among family members or during visits.

“In conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya, the public is advised to consistently practise health precautions and maintain personal and environmental hygiene.

“This is to ensure that the festive season can be enjoyed safely and in good health with loved ones,” it said.

Previously, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that 85 per cent of tuberculosis (TB) cases reported in the country involve local citizens, while only 15 per cent involve foreigners.

Meanwhile, Selangor Health Director Dr Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin advised high-risk groups, such as smokers and those with diabetes and chronic kidney disease, to be more vigilant about the threat of TB.

She also urged the public to practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette, especially in public places.

This is based not only on the principle of self-risk assessment but also on the important social responsibility to protect oneself, one's family, and the community from the risk of infectious diseases.
