SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — The public is advised against using ordinary face masks commonly worn during the Covid-19 pandemic for haze protection, as they are not designed to filter fine air pollution particles.
Selangor State Health Department director Dr Ummi Kalthom Shamsudin said N95 masks were more suitable during hazy conditions, especially for school-going children and individuals who frequently engage in outdoor activities.
“This is because haze particles are much finer than respiratory droplets, which were the main focus of face masks worn during the Covid-19 pandemic. Protection with a higher filtration capacity is needed (for haze).
“N95 masks must also be worn properly and fit snugly to ensure that inhaled air passes through the filter rather than entering through gaps around the face,” she told Media Selangor.
Dr Ummi also urged the public not to take rainy weather during haze lightly by viewing it as an opportunity to play or engage in outdoor activities.
She said rain during haze could carry particles and pollutants present in the air.
“Do not play in the rain during the haze season. We may be happy when it rains because we think it immediately clears the air, but various particles suspended in the air can also be present in rainwater.
“So, stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities.”
She advised the public to avoid physical activities such as exercising outdoors and not to take children to play in parks or open areas while hazy conditions persist.
“Drinking enough water is important to help reduce discomfort such as sore throats, as well as to keep the body hydrated.
“Those who spend prolonged periods outdoors are also advised to wash their faces thoroughly after returning home to remove dust and pollutants that may have settled on the skin,” she said.
