King tide: MB orders agencies to be prepared for any eventuality

SHAH ALAM, Feb 17 — All state government agencies have been instructed to remain alert and prepared in facing the king tide phenomenon, which is expected to persist from today until the end of the week.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state has also carried out inspections of its dams to ensure they are in good condition and free from issues such as leaks or structural failures.

He said there are only a few areas where works have yet to be fully completed.

"Follow-up measures and reminders will be carried out, and we hope to ensure that the king tide phenomenon does not have a major impact.

"This is especially if it coincides with heavy rainfall that could potentially trigger flooding events, as has happened in the past," he told reporters after attending a programme in Gombak today.

Amirudin was asked to comment on the king tide phenomenon that is forecast to hit coastal areas beginning today.

Earlier, the National Hydrography Centre warned that a king tide phenomenon is expected to occur from today until February 20, potentially causing seawater to overflow onto land and increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

It advised residents living along the coast to remain alert, monitor changes in sea levels, and follow official information issued by the authorities.

Yesterday, the Klang District Disaster Management Committee issued an alert for a high-tide phenomenon expected from Wednesday to February 22.

According to an infographic released by the Klang District Disaster Operations Centre (DDOC), high tides are expected to reach 5.4m on February 20 and 21 at the Port Klang measuring station.

Selangor has also been experiencing continuous rain over the past few days, raising concerns about the potential impact of high tides on low-lying and flood-prone areas.
