SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — Over 1,000 athletes will represent Selangor at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 from August 15 to 24, said Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) chief executive officer Mohamad Nizam Marjugi.
He added that qualified athletes will be chosen in March to complete the final phase of preparations.
He also said the number of state athletes for this edition is in line with Selangor’s status as host, and the MSNS will ensure there is no lack of home athletes in each event.
“The moment SUKMA 2024 ended, our athletes continued training and joined various championships to gain exposure and experience. They have been in the third phase since December, emphasising training.
“For now, we have a longlist for all sporting events. In March, we will shortlist the names, their events, and ensure only the most qualified athletes will represent the state at SUKMA,” Nizam told Media Selangor.
He explained that the final phase of preparations, from March to August, will be the most critical period for all quarters to make sure gold medals are within reach.
During that phase, he said MSNS will focus on training coaches and athletes and give other contingents a good fight.
He also said MSNS has kicked off early preparations for Para SUKMA and its 10 sports, with nearly 300 events to be held from September 5 to 14.
For SUKMA 2026, 51 venues across nine districts under 12 local authorities, private and public higher learning institutions, and private and public agencies will be activated, as well as the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, for track cycling.
The SUKMA torch relay will start in April across Selangor’s nine districts to kick off this year’s edition of the nation’s largest sporting event.
