State dengue cases down 3.3 pct thanks to effective intervention — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Feb 3 — Dengue cases in Selangor were down by 3.3 per cent last month compared with January last year, said state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

She said 1,719 dengue cases were recorded between January 18 and 24 (Epidemiological Week 3, EW3), 59 fewer than the 1,778 logged in EW3 last year.

She added that this decline reflects a positive trend throughout 2025 where Selangor’s dengue cases declined by 61 per cent from 2024.

“Deaths due to dengue also decreased, with only nine deaths reported in 2025 compared with 16 the year before.

“This shows that interventions and prevention efforts by the state government with the Selangor State Health Department, local authorities, and the community are effective.

“However, we don’t want these figures to increase again, and we hope to achieve a more drastic decline this year,” Jamaliah said in a statement today.

She advised the public to visit clinics or hospitals immediately if they have persistent fevers or suspicious symptoms.

She also urged local communities to periodically clean out possible Aedes mosquito breeding grounds at their homes.

Among the recommended steps are to spend at least 10 minutes a week on cleaning these areas, add larvicide to stagnant water, and check for possible Aedes breeding grounds periodically.

“The public is also advised to wear protective items such as mosquito repellent, light-coloured (long-)sleeved shirts and long pants, and use aerosol sprays at home to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes.

“Early checks could save lives. Don’t take this lightly, and seek treatment immediately if you have dengue symptoms,” Jamaliah warned.
