SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — As the Chinese New Year approaches, flower nurseries around Sungai Buloh have come alive once again, adorned with a wide variety of colourful, blooming festive flowers that enliven the atmosphere ahead of the celebrations.

As early as 9am, members of the public, particularly the Chinese community, began visiting the nurseries to purchase flowers symbolising good fortune, prosperity, and well-being in preparation for the festivities.

Rows of red lanterns and Chinese New Year decorations hung throughout the nursery areas, further enhancing the festive mood, while a wide selection of neatly arranged flowers caught visitors' attention.

A Media Selangor survey found that several operators opened their stalls before official operating hours to serve customers who arrived early in the morning to choose their preferred flowers.

By 10am, visitor numbers had increased significantly, resulting in traffic congestion at the nursery entrances and exits. Several police volunteers were deployed to help facilitate traffic flow and maintain order.

To attract visitors, traders also decorated potted flowers and plants with ornaments such as small lanterns, gold ingots, red packets, and Year of the Horse-themed decorations, creating a cheerful sales atmosphere.

The Chinese community in Malaysia is scheduled to celebrate the Chinese New Year on February 17.

Festive flowers brighten homes

Some visitors said that Chinese New Year flowers are an important part of brightening homes during the festive season, creating a fresh ambience and enhancing the celebratory mood.

Observations showed that many families visited together with a clear intention to purchase specific flowers, while others took longer due to the wide variety of flower types and colours available.

Some also acknowledged that the purchase of festive flowers has declined among younger generations due to work commitments and economic factors. Nevertheless, flowers are still regarded as capable of brightening the atmosphere and providing emotional calm.
