SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — Stern action, including fines and compounds, must be taken to eradicate illegal landfills, in line with the state government’s effort to tackle the longstanding problem, said Meru assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid.

She said the Environment Department (DOE) in particular plays a crucial role in enforcement, which also requires cooperation from various parties such as local councils.

“The state’s intention is commendable. In Meru, the issue of illegal dumping is also happening in areas like Bukit Cherakah Jaya and Kampung Budiman. To curb these illegal landfills, there must be firm enforcement action.

“The current fines or compounds may be viewed as too low, which means offenders can afford to pay, and that is why the offence keeps recurring.

“Other enforcement measures may also be taken, including seizing vehicles involved and blacklisting the licences of vehicle owners who dispose of waste illegally. We must be firm and not tolerate such activities,” she told Media Selangor.

Mariam said public awareness must also be boosted, especially among foreigners, as illegal dumping contributes to flooding and various diseases.

“There is a huge number of foreigners in Meru, and we want them to take responsibility to prevent problems with the drainage system,” she said.

In his New Year’s address on Monday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari reaffirmed the state’s commitment to eradicating illegal landfills, including by personally visiting dumping hotspots.

Amirudin warned that firm action would be taken against complicit parties, and instructed state subsidiary KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) to strengthen cooperation with local authorities.
