PETALING JAYA, Jan 28 — The Selangor International Junior Golf Championship (SIJGC) and the PKNS Selangor Masters 2026 are expected to help attract up to nine million tourists to the state this year, in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year (VYS) 2026.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the tournaments are not merely sporting events, but also play a role in strengthening sports tourism and delivering direct impact to the state’s tourism ecosystem.
“Events like these do not only involve sporting activities, but also stimulate the hospitality sector, including hotels, transportation, food and beverage, as well as various other supporting industries. Their impact brings comprehensive benefits to Selangor’s economy and tourism sector.
“Based on attendance in previous years, we expect more than 2,000 spectators to attend the golf events in person, not including coverage and television broadcasts, which are anticipated to generate a spillover effect after the tournaments,” he said during a media conference on the SIJGC and PKNS Selangor Masters 2026 at the Seri Selangor Golf Club today.
Amirudin added that hosting international-profile tournaments can increase tourist interest in visiting Selangor and further strengthen the state’s position as a global-standard sports and tourism destination.
“Based on experience from previous editions, the participation of international players also attracts foreign tourists from Korea, Japan, Europe, and neighbouring countries, thereby expanding Selangor’s tourism market internationally.
“The development and consistent organisation of golf tournaments are seen as an effective strategy to enhance sports tourism, in addition to supporting the sustainable growth of the state’s tourism sector,” he said.
The PKNS Selangor Masters, now in its 13th edition, will take place from February 11 to February 14 and feature 144 local and international professional golfers, with total prize money of US$175,000 (RM685,825).
Meanwhile, the SIJGC will feature 120 young players aged 12 to 19 from 11 countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam.
