SHAH ALAM, Jan 26 — Public cleanliness issues, especially efforts to eradicate illegal landfills, will be the state administration’s main focus this year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said he would visit each location, especially illegal dumping hotspots, to ensure the total eradication of such landfills.

“Conspirators will be levelled with strict action so Selangor is free of illegal dumping, which negatively impacts the people’s quality of life.

“Here I reiterate the need for close cooperation between KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) and local councils. Make sure there is information, there is a good relationship, so we can act together.

“We can no longer be hands off. If we blame other quarters, how would we solve problems? This is a shared problem, be it local councils, KDEBWM, or workers. We will make sure we all work as a team,” Amirudin said in his New Year’s address to civil servants here today.

He added that Selangor’s beautification goals can be achieved, as another waste-to-energy (WTE) plant will open this year.

According to him, the state government has also issued a special incentive of RM10 million for this year to clean up villages. He explained that Hulu Langat will receive the central focus as many reports have been received about the cleanliness of its homestay and chalets.

“We will use the money to solve solid waste collection issues, rather than just putting garbage bins outside villages, which then become unregulated dumping sites even if the garbage is collected every day.

“We will manage this waste issue as best we can. I have informed local councils and land offices to fight this issue to the end,” Amirudin said.

In December, Bernama reported that Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj said the palace has received many reports about how dirty Selangor is, and demanded urgent action to clean up the state.

His Royal Highness said the increase in complaints, which the people submitted with their contact details, showed that the community wants follow-up action and cares about urban cleanliness.
