AMPANG, Jan 24 — The Selangor government has assured that the supply of raw food materials in the state is sufficient to meet public needs ahead of Ramadan, as well as the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive seasons.
State executive councillor for agriculture Dato’ Ir Izham Hashim said the state administration is continuously working with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) to monitor supply levels and ensure they remain adequate for the daily needs of the people.
“However, the state government cannot afford to be overly complacent even though supplies are currently under control, and must instead take lessons from the experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“During an audience with Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, His Royal Highness also expressed concern over food supply issues, which remain a priority for the state government,” he told Media Selangor.
As a preparedness measure against any potential supply crisis, Izham said the state government has also mobilised the Selangor Food Warehouse (GMS), which stores essential stocks such as meat, chicken and rice.
He said the move is a proactive effort to ensure food supply stability, especially when demand increases during festive seasons.
On March 22, 2025, the Selangor government launched the GMS at Port Klang, which houses 5,000 tonnes of rice and 1,000 tonnes of frozen meat and is sufficient to meet the needs of about 20 per cent of the state’s population.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said Selangor became the first state to establish a strategic food reserve, with a total allocation of RM50 million.
