State sets deadline for encroachers to vacate gazetted cemetery land in PJ

SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 — The Selangor government has set March 31 as the deadline for the vacation of gazetted Islamic cemetery land in PJS 4, Petaling Jaya, following reports of encroachment that went viral on social media.

Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the land is not wakaf land as claimed, but gazetted Islamic burial ground that falls under JAIS’s jurisdiction.

He said the gazettement was carried out under Section 62 of the National Land Code 1965, dismissing allegations that the land is wakaf property under the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS).

“The state government has set March 31 as the final deadline to vacate the land. Failure to comply will result in enforcement action,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Mohd Shahzihan said site regularisation works have already begun through cooperation between the Petaling Jaya District and Land Office (PDT), local authorities and relevant enforcement agencies.

He added that PDT Petaling Jaya, together with JAIS, will lead enforcement operations if the evacuation order is ignored.

JAIS, MAIS and the state government will also continue to tighten monitoring to prevent future encroachment on gazetted land and wakaf property.

Members of the public who become aware of any encroachment are urged to report the matter to JAIS, MAIS, the district and land office or local authorities for further action.

Earlier, a Facebook user had posted claims alleging that wakaf land under MAIS management had been encroached upon by a place of worship.
