SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 — The state recorded a 61 per cent drop in dengue cases in 2025 compared with the previous year, following efforts to strengthen control and prevention measures statewide.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that cumulatively, Selangor recorded 23,565 dengue cases from Epidemiological Week (EW) 1/2025 to EW 53/2025, down from 60,364 cases in the same period in 2024.

The number of dengue deaths also declined from 16 cases to nine.

"This success is the result of continuous efforts by the state government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, particularly the Selangor Health Department (JKNS), local councils, other related agencies, and the community.

"Nonetheless, these efforts cannot be done on a seasonal basis. The state government is committed to maintaining this downward trend through a continuous and integrated approach," she said in a statement today.

Nationwide, Jamaliah said that Selangor ranked third for the highest percentage decline in dengue cases last year, behind Perak and Perlis, which recorded a 73 per cent and 70 per cent drop, respectively.

However, she noted that the populations of both states are far smaller than Selangor’s, which has more than seven million residents and dense urban areas, highlighting the effectiveness of dengue control efforts in large, high-risk communities.

To further empower dengue prevention and control measures, the state government has allocated RM4 million through the 2026 Selangor Budget.

"This allows the reinforcement of multi-pronged strategies through cooperation with JKNS, local councils, District and Land Office, non-governmental organisations, and the community,” said Jamaliah.

The measures taken include implementing integrated vector management, expanding Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquito release sites in hotspot areas, strengthening community-based interventions, and conducting gotong-royong programmes to eliminate breeding grounds.

"The state government will also continue with its dengue awareness campaign with improvements and greater community participation, and strengthen the role of the Selangor Health Community Volunteers (SUKA),” she said.
