KLANG, Jan 14 — Selangor remains the state with the most cooperatives, at 2,187, nationwide, with a total membership of 648,000 last year.
State executive councillor for consumer affairs and cooperatives Datuk Rizam Ismail said cooperatives in Selangor recorded assets worth RM2.5 billion, with estimated turnover and income reaching RM653 million as of June 30, 2025.
“However, the state government is not only focusing on the number of cooperatives. We are also placing emphasis on restructuring and empowering cooperatives to be more sustainable and competitive.
“It is not just about having a large number of cooperatives, but also about targeting development that supports food security through programmes such as the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda),” he said at a press conference after a Gerakan Koperasi Rumpun Selangor appreciation ceremony at Wyndham Acmar Hotel here last night.
Rizam said the state government will prioritise retail cooperatives’ development to boost food security, in line with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s vision.
“Retail cooperatives help the government control goods prices and reduce the role of middlemen, which ensures farmers’ produce reaches consumers directly.
“In developed countries, cooperatives are mobilised to stabilise prices and protect the welfare of both producers and consumers,” he said.
He added that Selangor cooperatives have achieved national recognition, with 12 listed among Malaysia’s best.
“Among them is Koperasi Masjid Nurul Yaqin Kelana Jaya Bhd, which was recently named the best mosque cooperative in the country.
“This reflects the determination of the cooperative movement in Selangor to build a strong and solid foundation,” he said.
Last night, Rizam presented awards to top cooperatives during the appreciation ceremony. The winners were:
Selangor Best Cooperative Award 2025: Koperasi Koswip Malaysia Bhd
