SHAH ALAM, Jan 13 — Pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) group Jejaka has cancelled the ‘Glamping With Pride’ programme, which had been scheduled to take place in Hulu Langat this weekend.
State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the cancellation was the result of the voices of the majority of the Muslim community in Selangor, who reject what he described as deviant culture.
“I would like to thank all parties, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) and the people of Selangor who were concerned and rejected the organisation of this programme.
“It is clear that the majority of the Muslim community rejects the promotion of deviant culture and organisations that support LGBT culture,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, the media reported that the organisers intended to proceed with the programme on Saturday (January 16), despite objections.
The group maintained that the two-day programme was a community-based retreat focusing on wellbeing, peer support, and health awareness.
Yesterday, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj instructed Mais chairman Dato' Setia Salehuddin Saidin and the Mufti of Selangor Dato' Setia Anhar Opir to take firm action against ‘Glamping With Pride’, scheduled on January 17 and January 18.
In a joint statement, they said that His Royal Highness had expressed strong opposition and objection to any deviant LGBT activities organised within the state.
Today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari reiterated the warning that the authorities would take legal action if the organisers proceed with activities involving LGBT elements.
