SHAH ALAM, Jan 10 — Carlton Hotel in Seksyen 13 here has been identified as a strategic location to develop Selangor’s e-sports hub, but construction hasn’t kicked off because there are unresolved land ownership and status issues, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the redevelopment can only start when these issues are settled.

“Per our checks, the matter is under Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, but there are land-related issues that need resolution with the Land and Mines Office (PTG).

“For now, there isn’t a specific location we have identified (for the e-sports hub); it’s just that Carlton Hotel is the most strategic one. For training, we are still using existing concepts like at malls, open halls, or at the Selangor Red Giants’ own game house.

“In terms of facilities, the existing game house is sufficient for training, but if the issues around Carlton Hotel can be resolved, we will look seriously into developing an e-sports hub there,” he said when met at the Petaling leg of the Selangor Future Cup tour at Central i-City here.

Previously, Jay Jay Denis, press secretary for Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, said the state is finalising the land ownership transfer for the Carlton Hotel site, and that the abandoned hotel was never meant to be a venue for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 in Selangor.

“We are now finalising the … handover of land from the previous company that was operating it, but (which) has not operated up to the level we hoped for.

“The hotel will be demolished because it is difficult to work with the current space, and rebuilt from the ground up for it to function as an e-sports stadium,” he said on Media Selangor’s Lunch On Us! programme, which aired on Monday.

In November 2024, Amirudin announced that Selangor would transform the hotel into an e-sports hub with a RM1 million investment, with the aim to host international and regional tournaments.
