Fewer flood victims in Johor, more in Pahang, Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — The number of flood victims in Pahang and Sarawak increased slightly, while Johor logged a decrease, with 1,538 victims this morning.

In PAHANG, the number of flood victims in Raub grew to 83 people (17 families) this morning from 74 people (15 families) yesterday evening.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Infobencana portal, the victims are sheltering at a temporary relief centre (PPS) in SK Ulu Atok.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) website showed that water levels at major river stations throughout Pahang are below the danger mark.

In SARAWAK, the number of flood victims increased to 1,343 people (342 families) as at 7am, from 1,320 people (338 families) last night.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in a statement said an increase in victims was recorded at the Masjid Darul Istiqlaal PPS in Kuching and SJKC Chung Hwa PPS in Lawas.

According to the statement, the number of victims at nine other PPS are unchanged, namely, at the Stapok Community Hall, R-Piang Hall Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Surau Ar-Rahman Kampung Sungai Batu, Surau Nurul Najhin Stapok, Taman Malihah Multipurpose Hall, SJKC Chung Hua Sungai Tengah, SJKC Chung Hua Batu Kawa, Kota Samarahan Civic Hall, and Trusan Community Hall.

In JOHOR, 112 victims (31 families) are still housed at PPS, down from 134 victims (36 families) yesterday.

Johor JPBN chairman Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said that in Segamat, five PPS remain open — Kampung Batu Badak Community Centre (40 victims from 12 families), Kampung Tasek Multipurpose Hall (18 victims from five families), Kampung Sanglang Community Centre (14 victims from four families), Kuala Paya Community Centre (23 victims from five families), and Kampung Tandong Multipurpose Hall (17 victims from five families).

“As of this morning, no thunderstorm warnings have been issued by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). However, Segamat district reported rain, Johor Bahru and Mersing were cloudy, and other districts were sunny.

“Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap, Segamat, recorded a reading of 8.53m, exceeding the danger level, while Sungai Tekam at the Sungai Tekam Jetty (river station) was at the warning level with a reading of 3.99m,” Asman said in a statement.
