Inflation under control: Selangor residents can spend at reasonable prices

GOMBAK, Dec 27 — The controlled inflation rate in Selangor has enabled the state’s residents to continue purchasing essential goods at reasonable prices, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The rate stands at 1.6 to 1.8 per cent, which helps maintain price stability for basic necessities despite differences in living costs across states.

“Price comparisons between states cannot be made directly because Selangor has a higher standard of living and income levels, particularly in the Klang Valley.

“Although prices in Selangor may appear higher compared with other states, inflation remains under control and residents are still able to afford essential goods. Economic conditions and income levels in Selangor are also different,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the media during his brief 20-minute visit to Pasar Tani Melawati in Gombak this morning, one of the main locations for residents to obtain daily necessities.

Malaysia’s inflation eased to 1.3 per cent in October, with the Consumer Price Index rising to 135.1 compared with 133.4 in the same month last year.

In Selangor, various initiatives have been introduced to assist lower-income groups in addressing the challenges of rising living costs, inflation, and financial pressure. They include:

  • The Bingkas programme: Monthly financial assistance of RM300 for eligible families.

  • The Bingkasan programme: Provided under the 2026 Selangor Budget with a RM5 million allocation to assist more families.

Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar stressed that the role of agencies that manage farmers’ and morning markets is crucial to ensure that middlemen do not manipulate prices and keep them at reasonable levels.

“The purpose of establishing these farmers’ markets is to stabilise prices and ensure that most goods are sold at fair prices that the public can afford,” he said.

Amirudin added that farmers’ markets and morning markets in Selangor, managed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, help set prices to protect consumers’ interests.

“InsyaAllah (God willing), the state government will continue to look into the best mechanisms to ensure that the people have access to essential goods at prices that do not place an undue burden on them,” he said.
