Three local councils retain pet ban at malls

SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) have reiterated their stance against allowing pets in malls.

Shah Alam Mayor Dato’ Mohd Fauzi Yatim said the ban is based on factors including visitor safety and cleanliness.

“MBSA agrees with and retains the ban on pets as it could threaten safety and cleanliness, as well as to respect the plural society.

“If there is a recommendation to allow this, I hope it involves local councils, as much needs to be considered by taking many factors into account,” Fauzi told Media Selangor.

Subang Jaya Mayor Dato’ Amirul Azizan Abd Rahim meanwhile said there hasn’t been a change in allowing pets into malls.

“Last week, we received a complaint involving a mall, and a meeting will be held with the mall management soon.

“For now, if they fail to follow the rules and the animal isn’t registered, they could face compounds. The act under the health department also doesn’t allow the operation of restaurants with animals over safety factors,” Amirul Azizan said.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon, on the contrary, said the MBPJ is finalising draft guidelines on allowing pets into cafes.

“At malls, pets are definitely not allowed, but there have been requests to allow them at cafes. However, we haven’t permitted this as there are no implementation guidelines.

“Guidelines are important as they would detail every rule by considering cleanliness and safety factors, including the law and enforcement action if (the guidelines) are flouted,” Zahri said.

Yesterday, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said malls in Selangor cannot admit visitors with pets.

He emphasised that the ban remains in effect while the state government relooks existing guidelines to ensure they are in line with the sensitivities of a multiracial society.
