SHAH ALAM, Dec 3 — The Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) has expedited the installation of smart traffic lights at the Rimba Permai intersection in Cyberjaya, to reduce crashes at the location, popularly known among residents as the “crossroads of death”.
The local council said a contractor for the project was appointed on November 26, with installation to be completed within two months.
“The smart stoplight system will be the main solution to control traffic flow and lower the crash rate in the area,” it said, as reported by Malaysia Tribune.
Ahead of the system’s activation, the council has added speedbumps, placed static guards and installed surveillance cameras at the intersection, so any traffic offence can be referred to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
In the meantime, MPSepang said it has placed rumble strips on the road, repainted yellow squares, and put up a “No U-Turns” sign in the area.
It explained that a roundabout that was planned at the location involved high costs, and several developments in the area delayed the roundabout even further, thus compromising road users’ safety.
However, video checks of crashes found that driver attitudes were also contributing factors.
“Common mistakes include speeding, turning recklessly, and U-turning in a ‘no U-turn’ area.
“Road users are advised to adhere to the speed limit and rules while waiting for the completion of the permanent solution,” MPSepang said, referring to the smart stoplight system.
