Uphold noble values to shape nation’s future, Sultan tells graduates

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has urged Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) graduates to uphold human values, embody noble character and preserve a culture of virtue in their respective careers to help shape the country’s future.

His Royal Highness, who is UPM Chancellor, said this aligns with the university’s ongoing efforts to expand its research, innovation and global cooperation networks, thereby strengthening its position as an international hub for education and research.

“The excellence of a graduate is not measured solely by academic achievements, but also by strong morals, integrity and human qualities.

“With these values, we can build a society that is well-mannered, knowledgeable, visionary and considerate,” he said at the second session of UPM’s 49th Convocation Ceremony, held at the Dewan Besar, Pusat Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah yesterday.

Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed hope that graduates will continue to uphold good conduct and humility as part of the culture embraced by the UPM community, especially as the country faces increasingly complex social and technological challenges.

He voiced confidence that UPM graduates will continue to be agents of change that bring benefits to the country through the knowledge, expertise and noble values formed throughout their studies at the university.

At today’s session, Sultan Sharafuddin conferred Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master’s degrees, Bachelor’s degrees and diplomas to 715 graduates from various study programmes.

His Royal Highness also conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Development Education on Datuk Mohd Fadzilah Kamsah and Professor Emeritus on academician Datin Paduka Khatijah Mohd Yusoff.

In total, 6,373 graduates will receive their degrees and diplomas at the 49th Convocation ceremony, comprising 771 PhD recipients, 1,948 Master’s degrees, 3,636 Bachelor’s degrees and 18 diplomas.
