Selangor floods: 24 PPS opened in five districts, victims rise to over 3,300

SHAH ALAM, Nov 28 — The number of flood victims in the state has increased to 3,310 people from 884 families, compared to 3,023 from 798 families earlier this afternoon.

The Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Infobencana portal reported that all victims have been placed at 24 temporary relief centres (PPS) operating across five affected districts: Sepang, Kuala Langat, Klang, Kuala Selangor, and Sabak Bernam.

Simultaneously, tropical storm Senyar, which struck the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia early this morning, is reported to have weakened. However, rain is expected to continue in several areas, keeping the flood risk high.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department's (MetMalaysia) director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the storm is now moving towards Pahang after losing strength upon making landfall.

Yesterday, MetMalaysia warned that Selangor, Perak, and parts of Pahang could be affected by Senyar, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 km/h and rainfall of more than 200mm within 24 hours.

Senyar is the first such storm ever recorded forming in the waters of the Strait of Malacca, heightening the risk of severe weather and continuous rain in the affected states.

Following this, the state government has ramped up preparedness to face the threat of the tropical storm, with public safety prioritised as the state experiences this phenomenon for the first time in its history.

Last night, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 1,173 PPS have been identified and placed on standby to accommodate up to 244,000 residents across Selangor.

To expedite relief operations, 344 assets, including four-wheel-drive vehicles, heavy-duty lorries and 227 boats, have been positioned at strategic locations throughout the state for aid delivery, evacuation of victims, and search-and-rescue operations.
