KUALA SELANGOR, Nov 25 — The Sungai Buloh flood mitigation plan will start operating by 2027, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the federal project will be closely monitored so it is completed on schedule and resolves flooding issues in the area.
“For this year, we have implemented several short-term projects and some have shown positive effects, but in this area, the barrier built is less effective due to overflow from continuous heavy rain.
“Thus, we will monitor the construction of the Sungai Buloh project that is set to reduce flooding issues by 60 per cent. According to the schedule, part of the project package will be done in stages in 2027, 2029, and 2030.
“We will also look into immediate steps that can be taken, including barrier reinforcement. Overall, the state government has allocated over RM20 million, including RM700,000 for the barrier in the area,” he said today.
Earlier, when met at SK Desa Aman, Amirudin said the school is the largest temporary relief centre (PPS) so far, housing nearly 1,000 flood evacuees.
He added that all local authorities have been ordered to perform cleanups and ensure drainage systems are in good condition.
“Local authorities have been asked to check drainage systems since October, including in flood-risk areas. We are also taking note of all complaints, including those related to construction.
“We will continue to monitor the situation periodically as we are worried about a second wave… this is just the start; December is expected to bring continuous high tides and rain,” Amirudin said.
He added that from Friday, RM500 will be given to each flood victim at PPS, once registration at the centres are complete.
“We expect aid to be channelled this week… this Friday if registrations are complete. We have to wait for everyone at the PPS to register first, and monitor if there are additions.
“If more people are placed at PPS, they will also receive aid,” he said.
In an earlier statement, Amirudin said: “As initial aid for victims who have moved to the PPS, the state government will provide RM500 to each of the 750 families confirmed to be registered in the affected districts.”
He said 221 of the victims are candidates for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), which starts today, and added that district offices will transport these students for free between the PPS and their schools.
“Yayasan MBI will channel immediate assistance to these students who lost their writing and digital tools due to the floods, to ensure they can continue their examinations more comfortably,” the statement read.
At 3.30pm, 2,795 victims from 750 families had been evacuated to seven PPS in Kuala Selangor, four each in Klang and Hulu Langat, and three each in Shah Alam and Sabak Bernam, for a total of 21.
