SHAH ALAM, Nov 23 — The Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) has become the first local authority in the state to organise a Community-Based Disaster Risk Programme, emphasising preparedness, education, and community resilience against natural disasters.

Held at Dewan Merdeka in Kuala Kubu Baharu, it brought together various parties, including government departments, disaster agencies, the National Disaster Management Association (Nadim), as well as residents’ committees, to enhance the community’s capacity in managing disaster risks.

MPHS President Julaihah Jamaludin said that all residents’ association chairpersons and community organisations must serve as strategic partners in strengthening disaster risk monitoring in their respective areas.

“Every individual needs to be the eyes and ears for MPHS in identifying early warning signs of potential hazards,” she said when officiating the programme.

Julaihah added that the programme supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which aims to create sustainable cities and communities, with a target to reduce the impact of disasters on lives, the economy, and infrastructure.

It also aligns with SDG 13, Climate Action, by increasing awareness and education on climate adaptation and resilience against climate-related risks.

The programme provided the community with opportunities to understand early preparedness steps, rapid response techniques, and their role in reducing risks and the impact of disasters in their respective locations.

She also thanked all parties involved in making the programme a success, including Nadim, various government agencies, and the local community.

Julaihah emphasised that MPHS is committed to leading a resilient community approach in facing increasingly complex disaster challenges caused by climate change.
