SHAH ALAM, Nov 21 — State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim has confirmed that the two waste-to-energy (WTE) plants in Jeram are scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of next year.
Measures are in place to carefully manage environmental, social, and traffic impacts, and the plants, developed by Worldwide Holdings Bhd, will each have the capacity to process 1,500 tonnes of waste daily.
He said the technology, which has been widely used in countries like Singapore, Japan, China, and Turkiye, represents a more sustainable alternative to conventional sanitary landfills.
“Our current landfill in Jeram is nearly full, and acquiring additional land would cost tens of millions of ringgit. If there are no delays, the plants will be ready by the end of this year and are expected to operate in the first quarter of 2026.
“This marks a new chapter in Selangor, shifting waste management from traditional landfills to modern WTE technology,” he said in his winding-up speech for the 2026 Selangor Budget during the State Legislative Assembly session today.
Addressing public concerns about the proximity of plants to educational institutions and residential areas, Ng cited an example from Tokyo, Japan, where WTE facilities can operate safely even within 30 metres of schools.
“We take all suggestions seriously, but as a responsible government, we must implement solutions that benefit future generations while ensuring minimal environmental impact,” he said.
On concerns raised by Kuang state assemblyman Mohd Rafiq Abdullah regarding potential traffic congestion affecting residents, the councillor said that, since around 200 garbage trucks are expected to enter and leave the site daily, comprehensive measures are being put in place.
These include detailed traffic management plans, the identification of alternative routes, and thorough environmental impact assessment (EIA) and social impact assessment (SIA) studies to minimise disruption.
Ng also assured that the project will not be rushed and that all necessary approvals and procedures will be strictly followed.
