SHAH ALAM, April 29 — The Jeram 1 Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Plant, scheduled to begin operations in June, will be capable of processing up to 1,500 tonnes of solid waste daily, strengthening Selangor’s waste management system.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the implementation of the WTE project, one of the key initiatives under the First Selangor Plan, marks an important step in reducing reliance on landfill sites.

“In June, the Jeram 1 WTE treatment plant will begin processing 1,500 tonnes of solid waste out of the total 8,000 tonnes managed in Selangor.

“Not long after, the second WTE plant in Jeram, which is currently under construction, will be completed, while the WTE facility in Tanjung Dua Belas is expected to be ready by 2028.

“Altogether, the three plants are projected to manage between 4,000 and 5,000 tonnes out of the 8,000 tonnes of solid waste currently handled,” he said during the winding-up session of the motion of thanks for the royal address of the Sultan of Selangor during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

Selangor is among the states implementing WTE projects independently, differing from others that rely on Federal-level initiatives.

Amirudin added that the state government has also approved grid integration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad and is now awaiting the commercial phase before full operations commence.

The increasing volume of solid waste in Selangor, now reaching approximately 8,000 tonnes daily, requires more sustainable approaches, including WTE technology as an alternative to conventional landfill sites.

“WTE is part of a long-term solution to reduce dependence on landfill sites, which are no longer sustainable, while also adding value to the state’s waste management system,” he said.

Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj advised the state government to place greater emphasis on developing the WTE industry, as it is expected to be a key driver in addressing future waste management challenges and sustainable energy needs.
