SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — Media practitioners are advised to exercise greater caution when using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including applications such as ChatGPT, to avoid mistakes that could damage the reputation of individuals or organisations.

Media Selangor editor-in-chief Noor Azam Shairi said the use of technology without proper verification could have profound implications, citing the recent reporting error by a prominent Pakistani newspaper that drew global criticism.

“A reputation built over 84 years can be destroyed in an instant due to negligence in using AI and ChatGPT. In the end, it becomes the world’s laughing stock,” he said during the Media Selangor: Media Partners Appreciation Night at the Platform 19 Cafe last night.

Azam stressed that professional reputation is a crucial asset for media practitioners; therefore, every report must undergo a thorough verification process to uphold the good name of individuals, organisations, and media brands.

“If this reputation is not safeguarded, it means nothing. An individual’s reputation collapses, a company’s reputation is affected, and a brand’s reputation is destroyed.

“Although technology makes our job easier, some things must be preserved. The use of AI, fact-checking processes, and accuracy in reporting are major challenges that must be given due attention,” he said.

Azam also hoped that media relations in Selangor would continue to be strengthened ahead of next year, which is expected to be busier with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj's Silver Jubilee celebration, the hosting of the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma), and the tabling of the Second Selangor Plan.

Meanwhile, Media Selangor has expressed its appreciation for the role of media practitioners in the state by presenting a RM1,000 contribution to the Selangor Journalists and Photographers Association (Wajar), with Azam presenting the contribution to its chairman Norrasyidah Arshad during the event.
