I-GATE to resolve long-standing assessment tax issues, boost local council revenue

SHAH ALAM, Nov 16 — A newly introduced system announced in the 2026 Selangor Budget is said to provide a long-awaited solution to longstanding issues involving assessment tax management at local councils.

Klang mayor Dato’ Abdul Hamid Hussain said the Integrated Assessment Tax Arrears Matching and Verification System (I-GATE) would help reduce tax negligence among property owners while improving revenue efficiency for the local councils in the state.

“With I-GATE, all property owners can now easily check their bills and make payments within the stipulated period.

“This initiative will not leave room for excuses, such as taxpayers claiming they did not receive their bills or were unaware of the outstanding amount,” he said.

Apart from checking bills, the integrated system also allows property owners to access accurate arrears information and make payments via various digital channels without visiting council offices.

Better transparency in information access is also expected to reduce record errors and accelerate the verification process.

Commenting on the digital reform for local authorities scheduled to begin next June, Abdul Hamid said the improvements will extend to the public, including online applications for planning permission and complete digital submission for renovation approvals.

“The public will no longer need to make repeated trips to council offices, as all applications can be submitted and monitored online. Local council officers can then issue approvals quickly and transparently based on the information received,” he said.

Abdul Hamid also stated that the comprehensive digitisation will also close gaps for manipulation that previously existed in manual processes.

“This system ensures more efficient, transparent, and professional handling of applications, without the need for physical meetings that could open opportunities for unethical practices.

“With this reform, all information will be available online and accessible at any time, ensuring approvals are made promptly and accurately,” he added.
