Rasau WTP Phase 2 guarantees more stable water reserves in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 — The Rasau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Phase 2 project is expected to help increase the state's water reserves to 20 per cent, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim.

He said the mega project, which will begin next year, can produce treated water of up to 700 million litres per day (MLD), making it a key catalyst for the state’s water supply stability.

"We will do it in phases, based on needs. There’s no use building too much at once, as water demand increases by 300 to 400 MLD each year.

“We plan it in a way that meets the state's water needs, while also building reserves. If possible, we want to achieve a 20 per cent reserve," he told Media Selangor after the tabling of the 2026 Selangor Budget at the State Legislative Assembly here yesterday.

Izham said Selangor previously had a low water reserve margin, making the state vulnerable to supply disruptions whenever WTP shutdowns or pipe bursts occurred.

"Two or three years ago, our reserve margin was very low. If there were any issues with pipe bursts or plant shutdowns, we did not have enough water to supply to residents.

"It is crucial to increase the margin, and the 20 per cent rate is appropriate," he said.

When tabling the state budget yesterday, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari announced that the Rasau WTP Phase 2 project is scheduled to begin development next year until 2028, with an allocation of RM2.6 billion.

The project, part of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme, is expected to supply water to 467,000 consumer accounts in the Petaling and Kuala Langat districts by 2031.
