SHAH ALAM, Nov 14 — Some 4,000 Selangor students enrolling at state-owned universities for the September 2026 intake will enjoy a 50 per cent discount on their tuition fees, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
The state government will cover half of the cost through the Higher Education Subsidy programme with a RM17.38 million allocation, benefiting students at Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS).
“In other words, the state government is offering a 50 per cent free education to Selangor residents, especially those in UIS and Unisel,” he said when tabling the 2026 Selangor Budget in the State Legislative Assembly today.
The subsidy is included in the RM35.72 million allocation for Selangor’s higher education sector next year, an increase of RM11.52 million from 2025.
The allocation covers student development programmes, upgrades for state-owned higher education institutions, and the Selangor State Scholarship Fund.
Amirudin added that student development initiatives will continue next year, including the Jerayawara Siswa Kita Selangor, which will be expanded to China, Japan, and Korea, as well as national and international editions of the Kita Selangor Student Convention.
RM200,000 will also be allocated to rebrand Bandar Ilmu Putra Mahkota as an education, research, and innovation hub.
Other initiatives include the Basic University Fee Assistance programme, which benefits 500 to 600 students annually and will be expanded to cover foundation studies with an additional RM1 million allocation.
The RM200 Kita Selangor book voucher initiative will also continue, with RM2 million allocated to benefit 10,000 students.
Under the Selangor Programme for Aspiring, Ready, and Knowledgeable Talents (SPARK) internship scheme, 500 interns in state agencies, subsidiaries and the offices of state executive councillors and assembly members will receive RM1,500 in monthly allowance, supported by RM1.5 million in funding.
RM10 million will also be channelled towards facility upgrades at Unisel, UIS, the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), and Yayasan Selangor hostels.
Meanwhile, the Selangor State Scholarship Fund will receive RM15 million to support more students, bringing the total to 30,305 beneficiaries since 1985 and a cumulative commitment of RM429.8 million.
He said the Selangor Education Summit, a biennial event, will return in 2026 with a RM5 million allocation, combining the Selangor International Book Fair 2026, the Selangor Edu-STEM, the Selangor Research and Innovation Expo, Selangor Skills, and the Selangor Techsphere Summit.
For the Hadiah Pengajian IPT incentive, RM5 million is allocated to benefit 5,000 students in 2026, up from RM3 million in 2025. Separately, RM31.51 million will be channelled to Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor to provide RM1,500 to 21,295 members turning 18 in 2026.
